Rooney to retire from England duty after 2018 World Cup
England captain Rooney said: “Not taken aback, I think a bit disappointed, because some of the England players are club mates with some of the Wales players”. I started playing professional football when I was 16, and started playing internationals when I was 17.
“I’m sure a lot of the English players have had that and it’s something which I’m sure Sam will look at over the next year and try to work out why that’s the case”.
Captain since August 2014, Rooney is also England’s record goal-scorer with 53 goals.
According to Telegraph UK, Rooney will continue to play for Manchester United and now the player has to finish three years of his contract.
The Manchester United striker will be aged 32 by the time the World Cup comes around.
Rooney did not name any of the players who were upset by the behaviour of the Wales squad but the clubs covered were Arsenal (Jack Wilshere and Aaron Ramsey), Tottenham Hotspur (Kane, Eric Dier, Dele Alli and Ben Davies), Liverpool (Daniel Sturridge, Adam Lallana and Joe Allen) and Leicester City (Jamie Vardy and Andy King). I’ve still got three years left [on his contract].
“I’ve had a fantastic global career so far”.
“I feel I’ve still got something to offer this team and the manager feels that as well”.
“Realistically I know myself that Russian Federation will be my last opportunity to do anything with England”. “We would have done something to stop it happening, so I can’t sit here and say we didn’t win this game because of this and this”.
“Every time I have played for England I keep saying I’m proud to do so, it is a huge honour for me so to do it more than any outfield player will be great – but it isn’t about playing, it is about trying to win and that is what I have been trying to do”. The youngster though made a massive impact for the team at the weekend and got a deserved victor against Hull City to keep up United’s 100 percent start to the Premier League season. I don’t think Roy had an issue with that.
