Root rested by England for limited-overs series
Joe Root has been rested from the England squad for the Twenty20 match and five one-day internationals against Australia after his Ashes-winning exploits.
Veterans James Anderson, Stuart Broad and Ian Bell were all axed as the selection panel opted for youth as they build towards a home World Cup in 2019.
Moeen Ali is back in both squads too, having been injured at the start of the summer, as is his fellow all-rounder Chris Woakes, who was similarly absent until recently with knee and hamstring trouble.
Essex left-arm seamer Reece Topley – the only player in the T20 squad yet to be capped at global level – is included for the shorter format after taking 16 wickets at 22.03 apiece in this season’s NatWest T20 Blast.
Eoin Morgan is the captain of both the T20 and ODI squads.
But there was no place for Yorkshire wicketkeeper batsman Jonny Bairstow even though he revived his worldwide career with a series-clinching 83 not out against New Zealand at Chester-le-Street in June.
“We have made some vital progress in our limited-overs cricket this summer time and the subsequent six video games permit these gamers to proceed testing themselves towards one of many best possible sides on the planet”, national selector James Whitaker stated in a press release on Monday.
“This is primarily a young group of players, and the next three weeks will provide them with valuable experience as we continue to identify those who can take our limited-overs cricket forward over the next four years”.
Watch England take on Australia in the Twenty20 global on Monday 31st August from 2.30pm on Sky Sports Ashes.
Australia face Ireland in a one-day worldwide in Belfast on Thursday in what will be their first 50 overs per side clash since the World Cup.
Moeen was omitted from the one-day matches against New Zealand so that he could play red-ball cricket for Worcestershire ahead of the Ashes.
