Rory looking to be back for PGA title defense at Whistling Straits
McIlroy finished third, one shot out of a playoff, when the PGA was played at Whistling Straits in 2010.
“I think that’s just the way I’m going to be”, McIlroy said before the U.S. Open about missing cuts at the Honda Classic and Irish Open.
World No. 1 Rory McIlroy gave the strongest hint yet in a teasing Twitter post on Friday that he plans to defend his PGA Championship title next week at Whistling Straits after recovering from an ankle injury.
After missing the cut at The Players Championship, Spieth said in an interview with the Golf Channel that he isn’t rivals with McIlroy because he believed he wasn’t, “on his level yet”.
One Instagram video showed McIlroy balancing on a foam pad on only his left leg – without a brace or other support on the left ankle – while he turns to catch and heave a weighted ball.
On Thursday, the Ulsterman took to the driving range to get back in the swing of things, while also showing the extent of the damage that was done to his ankle. But it certainly looks like he wants to make it happen.
Of course, McIlroy, Spieth and Fowler aren’t the only ones, they are simply the leaders in the clubhouse right now. Judging the camber, slope and likely trajectory of each shot feels like a particularly tough maths equation and you’ll often see what seems to be a relatively simple putt roll a long way from the hole. It’s a tough walk. He’s a fit kid.
Anyone who does come will park in the south public parking lot off Lakeshore Road, which is free for this weekend, and a shuttle will help transport people back and forth from the tent. The American was denied the prestigious opportunity to become the first golfer in history to hold all four of the sport’s majors in a single calendar year after finishing tied fourth at The Open, alongside Jason Day.
The PGA Championship begins August. 13 at Whistling Straits in Kohler, Wis.
Martin Laird and Sean O’Hair were the first two alternates.
