The game acts as a golfing simulator and has three different ways players can play golf. However you want to take on a course is at your fingertips, you can make the game as easy or hard as you like. It should be noted, however, that EA is planning on releasing free courses after the game is released. Spaniard Miguel Angel Jimenez, 2013 PGA champion Jason Dufner, former FedEx Cup victor Brandt Snedeker, rookie standout Patrick Rodgers and Jonas Blixt round out the lineup of 12 pros. Of course, players also have the freedom to create their own golfer and carry them through Career mode.

The Verdict: This stunning and in-depth golf sim would have had even greater potential if EA didn’t hold back on content but what “Rory McIlroy PGA Tour” does, it does exceedingly well. There’s so little competition on the market right now for golf titles that EA had a chance to really knock this out of the park this year, but even with two years off it’s disappointing that this is the best they could come up with. Players first learn how to improve basic skills, but then unlock challenges and powers that make the game more fun and defy the laws of physics. I’m generally indifferent to commentary in sports games anyways, it often does a poor job of mimicking televised events, something you’ll be reminded of every time you hear Frank Nobilo and Rich Lerner open their mouths to say something here. Full course loading offers limitless options when attacking the green and zero wait times when moving from hole-to-hole. The game uses some inspirational quotes from the golfer as well.

Character creation also feels like it’s taken a step back for career mode.

If you fancy something a bit different from the usual round of golf, the Night Club Challenge offers more than 170 challenges across three different courses. Or players can compete against friends online.

For the most part, Rory McIlroy PGA Tour plays very well on the golf course itself, from transitions to the actual gameplay. There is a lot of freezing at times where the screen lags on something as simple as hitting the back button to go to another part of the menu.

I had a surprisingly fun time playing PGA Tour. This isn’t something that will constantly plague players, but it can get bothersome when it does.

With the game running on the Frostbite 3 engine, PGA Tour has a clean and detailed look to its environments.

There is a good choice of 13 courses to pick from, including TPC Sawgrass, the challenging Wolf Creek, TPC Boston and St Andrews, but my favourite was the one familiar to Battlefield 4 gamers (of which I am an avid one) – Paracel Storm, complete with wrecked warships and gun emplacements. It certainly has no effect on the gameplay, but in a great sports game like this one, it feels like a let-down.
