Rory McIlroy stumbles during opening round at US Open
Wearing a green shirt – one bare of any major sponsors – Landry’s got all the way to 5 under after draining three straight birdies on Nos.
Bubba Watson was part of the four-player pack pursuing Landry at 2 under. The next day he beat Al Espinoza by 23 shots over 36 holes.
If there was a marquee player or two think you missed, don’t worry.
We’ll pick up the action right here at 7:45 a.m. ET and stay with it until play concludes. “How is that in the bunker?”
The sun came out at Oakmont Country Club after the third and final weather delay on Thursday, but the rain set in again overnight and the course was soaked with more water.
McIlroy and company will have a chance to reset for the rest of the day on Friday, as a backlog at soggy Oakmont means they likely won’t hit the course again until Saturday. “I was shaping it both ways, which you need to do in U.S. Opens to get at a lot of the flags”.
Play is scheduled to resume Friday at 7:30 a.m., meaning all but the nine golfers who completed the first round can expect to play more than 18 holes. There, Neels Els watched his son Ernie, a two-time U.S. Open champion, wrap up a session on a nearby practice green in anticipation of his 24th Open start.
Though half the field hasn’t played a shot yet at Oakmont Country Club, U.S. Open officials still project a Sunday finish for the championship.
The shot put Landry at a minus-4 for the first round. He was at 3-under par.
“I was trying to get it in”, said Landry, a three-time All-American for the Razorbacks. “So you’ve got to get yourself into contention and see how you do under the pressure”. McIlroy matched his highest U.S. Open score. “You never play with a kind of a loose attitude, where we all play our best”.
Mickelson doesn’t mind the difficulty of Oakmont, even though he hasn’t done well in his two previous U.S. Opens here.
“I still feel young, I don’t know”, he said. “I start to pick up a leaf and ask, ‘Can I move this leaf?’ He stared at me for a minute and said, ‘If you move that leaf, you’ll be lying 12′”.
The road back is much longer for Masters champion Danny Willett, Rory McIlroy and Rickie Fowler.
Mickelson, who has been runner-up six times in the Open, bogeyed his first hole but quickly settled down and made the turn in 1-under par. Fowler has missed the cut in three of his last five events.
The Oakmont course is widely held to be the most challenging of all US Open venues.
Jordan Spieth shot 72 and thought it could have been lower. His shot stopped short of the green. With the greens being a little bit softer, it’s definitely doable out here.
Starting on No. 10, Bryon DeChambeau had a 40-foot birdie attempt that didn’t stop until it was some 35 feet beyond the hole. He honed his game along the Texas coast, once shooting a 58 while doing two loops around a nine-hole track not far from his childhood home affectionately known by the locals as “the Pea Patch”.
The hole he dug himself at Oakmont kept getting deeper.
The U.S. Open 2016 will be played at Oakmont County Club in Plum, Pennsylvania, a suburb northeast of Pittsburgh. He tied for fifth in 2007.
Bad weather appears to be the only thing that can slow Andrew Landry, the U.S. Open rookie who zoomed out to 5 under and claimed the lead in Round 1. “And then the fairway bunkers are nearly a penalty stroke, too, because they’re so deep”.
