Rose falters as Grillo wins Frys.com Open
Na wound up with a bogey.
Grillo is part of the class of 2011, with its fame growing nearly by the month as it includes the likes of Jordan Spieth, Justin Thomas, Daniel Berger and Ollie Schneiderjans, with the former two quick to tweet their congratulations. He played the Puerto Rico Open as a non-member, but lost in a playoff.
“I want to win it, ‘” Grillo said.
“I don’t think it’s a technical issue at all because I putt the ball really well on the putting green”, he said. “I don’t know what happened (but) I stayed positive”.
Grillo, already being touted as rookie of the year contender, won in his first tournament as a card-carrying tour member.
The 54-hole cut knocked out nine players, so the final round will be played in twosomes from one tee. This one was worth a lot more.
A two-year exemption. A check for $1.08 million.
His three-under effort gave him a 14-under par total of 202, one shot in front of a pair of surging players – Web.com tour graduate Andrew Loupe who carded a 63 and Kevin Na, who posted a 64 on the Silverado Country Club course. It also gets him in the Masters, PGA Championship, The Players and the WGC-HSBC Champions and WGC-Bridgestone Invitational.
But he made no mistake on the next, sinking a birdie putt to win for the first time on the PGA Tour. He did not come to the media room for an interview, typical of playoff losers. He followed that up with rounds of 69 (-3) and 68 (-4) to leave himself on -12, two shots off the lead, going into the closing day.
Thompson finished at 15-under 273, earned $300,000 and is projected to jump from fifth to fourth in the world ranking. Two weeks later, another 25-foot birdie putt on the 18th hole sent him soaring. Thomas, who closed with five pars, narrowly missed a 30-foot putt.
Jason Bohn had the opportunity to take control of the tournament after a birdie on 16.
Steele missed the green on the par-5 16th with a wedge in his hand. “The putts seemed to slide by the edge”.
“I woke up and the room was spinning”, he said. “Kind of got a little found out today”. It started with Brendan Steele, who was trying to go wire-to-wire and was still in position until he hit a poor fairway bunker shot on No. 12. With the ball slightly above his feet, Na opted for a driver off the tight turf, a shot that he “hit perfect” five or six times this week.
Justin Rose was tied for the lead and began his slide by missing a 3-foot putt.
Sullivan’s nine-shot winning margin shattered the previous event record of three strokes by Alexander Levy from last season. Made birdie in regulation to get in. But he missed a 7-foot birdie chance at No. 14 and never got a closer look at birdie the rest of the way, including the par 5s at Nos.
The 58-year-old German star birdied the final two holes – making an 18-footer on the par-4 18th – for a 7-under 65 and a three-stroke victory over Scott Dunlap. “If you play well you can go low but it’s going to find you out if you’re not on your game”.
