Rose McGowan Outs Another Hollywood ‘Predator’: ‘I Was Molested At 15’
McGowan accused Harvey Weinstein of raping her in 1997.
The audience member went on to accuse McGowan of doing “nothing” for trans women, and was eventually led out of the venue by security while chanting “white cis feminism”.
Farrow said that McGowan had told him the director’s name in his reporting but that it had been off the record.
Rose McGowan is not calm, and in “Citizen Rose”, she often doesn’t come across as particularly collected. While McGowan’s voice is sometimes divisive within the movement, it’s important, poignant, and necessary.
Citizen Rose is strongest at the start, when it juxtaposes McGowan’s present-day anguish with the media coverage of her as a young starlet in the late 1990s and early 2000s. As Farrow reported in the New Yorker, Weinstein’s associates hired the private intelligence firm Black Cube to try to discredit his accusers, including McGowan. If it’s not exactly pleasant to spend time with Rose McGowan in this way, it makes sense: it’s probably not exactly pleasant to be Rose McGowan right now.
The conversation wrapped up with a question about what kind of punishment she believes Weinstein and similar men deserve. The actress recently spoke with journalist Ronan Farrow, to whom she opened up about her accusations against Weinstein and the other man who took advantage of her. When asked if she’d had a long day, she replied, “It’s been a long life”. She was sexualized, typecast to play the “villain” and/or the vampy sex kitten, McGowan’s magazine rap sheet reads like a series from one of those scandalous pulp novels of yore.
Furthermore, McGowan’s publicist reminded everyone that it has already been proven that Weinstein resorts to espionage tactics to subdue the allegations that are being made against him. Who are part of the pimp problem?
“The enablers aren’t insane like them, so what’s their excuse?”
On that podcast, she had this to say: “They assume because they felt like a woman on the inside”.
Twitter users called out the lack of intersectionality – an acknowledgement of other marginalized groups within a movement – in McGowan’s activism after the argument at Barnes and Noble, and also after an incident in October. “Every single place he ever stayed, there were people there set up to help him rape”, McGowan said. Why should I even go to therapy?
“Trans women are women and what I’ve been trying to say is that it’s the same”. But it is, after all, reality. Next, she vented against the industry women who didn’t take her side.
The Rose McGowan transgender comments at the Barnes and Noble bookstore aren’t much better because she has basically stated that there’s virtually no difference between the lived experiences of trans woman and cisgender women.
McGowan: ‘Cause I think she’s a lie.
“Citizen Rose” isn’t flawless, but it succeeds in one of the primary goals of the #MeToo movement: making women feel less alone.
