Roseanne Barr’s show cancelled after ‘repugnant’ comments – co-stars react
‘We are all greatly distressed by the disgraceful and unacceptable tweet from Roseanne Barr this morning, ‘ ICM said in an internal note to employees that was obtained by the Hollywood Reporter. Sanofi, the makers of Ambien, responded to say that “racism is not a known side effect”.
Valerie Jarrett is speaking out about the racist tweet Roseanne Barr directed at her.
Barr has been a vocal supporter of President Trump, and he’s returned the accolades. She has since apologized, but soon after, her ABC show was canceled and she was dropped by her agency.
Update, 5/30, 12:07 AM: Roseanne has now determined that costing all those people their jobs isn’t as bad as she herself being labelled a racist. In her apology, Barr said the Jarrett comment was “in bad taste”.
Yet many saw a disturbing pattern being followed instead of a joke.
This is a woman who grabbed her crotch and screeched her way through “The Star-Spangled Banner” at a baseball game in 1990.
In a follow-up tweet, Barr blamed her racist messages attacking Jarrett on “ambien tweeting”. It’s clear, though, that Barr’s social media habits were a sore point.
“But honestly she got what she deserved”. But that was not a promise she was able to keep for long.
The announcement sent ripples through the entire industry, with Robert Iger, chairman and CEO of the Walt Disney Company, which owns ABC, quoting the official statement that called Barr’s tweet “abhorrent, repugnant and inconsistent with our values”.
Was ABC’s gamble worth the risk to its reputation? That must be what the cast of ABC’s revived Roseanne are thinking of right now.
The tweets generated a tidal wave of response, including from the cast and creators of the show. The network – indeed all of broadcast television – needed some successful comedies.
The current Roseanne was ABC’s biggest hit of the 2017-2018 season, drawing an average 18.7 million viewers, second only to CBS sitcom The Big Bang Theory.
“I think they knew what they were getting into with Roseanne”, Frazier said. The actions of Bill Cosby, star of The Cosby Show, caused television networks to cease airing reruns of his hit 1980’s sitcom.
“How do you stop someone who does something like this in the middle of the night?” he said. I apologize to Valerie Jarrett and to all Americans. Sara Gilbert initially tweeted about Barr’s controversial tweets. But amid the mounting backlash, ABC canceled the show. And it is up to all of us to push back – our government’s only going to be just as good as we make it be.
But Roseanne was different, he said.
