Rossi wins British GP, retakes sole lead in MotoGP standings
“In the rain I didn’t have the same pace as Valentino and Marquez”.
Marquez smashed his record lap time from 2013 as he blazed around the legendary circuit in 2min 0.234sec under clear skies that made for flawless racing on softer option tires. The next grand prix is in Misano, Italy. The Doctor has a points tally of 236 and now regains the lead in the championship. Finding himself incredibly in fourth place after the two LCR Honda’s vacated, Petrucci and compatriot Andrea Dovizioso simultaneously swooped on Movistar Yamaha rider on lap seven to then battle for the last podium position.
“He’s nearly out of the championship, definitely”, said Lorenzo of Marquez.
On the start of lap three, Rossi took Lorenzo at the first-gear Village Corner. Crutchlow pitted for repairs, only to crash out for a second time. Ducati Team’s Andrea Dovizioso did the same, passing Pedrosa to move into fifth.
Speaking after the race, Rossi admitted he was mindful of making an error after seeing Marquez come off.
Rossi assumed the lead, with Marquez glued to his tail through the first half of the race and looking poised to make a late challenge in the ever worse conditions.
Teammate Lorenzo also had a strong start from second on the grid.
I was upset, but luckily I remained on the track and I tried to stay in third position, but Petrucci, Dovizioso and Pedrosa passed me.
It was an all-Spain first row, as 6-time world champion and MotoGP legend Valentino Rossi of Movistar Yamaha MotoGP finished stronger than usual in qualifying, which is notoriously his Achilles heel. At the finish it was Rossi winning by a margin of 3.010-seconds.
Pol’s brother Aleix of team Suzuki Ecstar began the qualifying session very strongly, looking to get a step up on other racers with teammate Maverick Vinales. Fourth went to Lorenzo, who was followed by Pedrosa, Marc VDS Racing’s Scott Redding and Monster Yamaha Tech 3’s Bradley Smith. Jorge Lorenzo encountered some difficulties but fought bravely at the British Grand Prix to claim a solid fourth place.
