Roster Cuts Were a Solid Move For Tennessee Titans
The Minnesota Vikings traveled to Tennessee to take on the Titans in what was their final preseason game of the season.
Mariota has been solid in his first three preseason games, completing 19-of-27 passes for 252 yards, no touchdowns, an interception and an 84.2 passer rating. Coach Mike Zimmer and offensive coordinator Norv Turner have indicated they’d prefer to have three QBs on the roster, and Heinicke hit all 11 of his passes against Dallas before playing all of the Vikings’ preseason finale against Tennessee.
Teddy Bridgewater and the Minnesota Vikings starters got the night off in Tennessee. Banyard, who fought his way through the road less traveled to the Vikings’ 53-man roster in 2014, took his first step toward the regular season spotlight by earning a practice squad spot in 2012.
“We’re in America so you play to win whether it’s ping pong or a hot dog eating contest”, Reid said.
“Well, I don’t really care about my record, but I don’t like to lose”, he said.
HIGHLIGHT PLAY: Ryan Succop chased down a bad snap on an extra point attempt in the fourth quarter, and the Titans kicker heaved a pass downfield to defensive lineman Angelo Blackson who made a nice over the shoulder catch for the 2-point conversion. Blackson compensated by sacking Heinicke, allowing the Titans to run out the clock. David Cobb (calf) and Dorial Green-Beckham (healthy scratch) did not play, which was disappointing, especially in Green-Beckham’s case, who has had a promising preseason even though the Titans have not used him in a way that showcases his rare ability.
Former University of Oregon quarterback Marcus Mariota is the latest roommate in Nissan’s Heisman House, an annual ad campaign featuring some of college football’s best all-time players. But it is still something I know Zimmer is not thrilled about and I expect him to do what he can to get that fixed.
The Titans looked effective and played well. They were seventh in third down efficiency (45.7), eighth in points per game (21.3) and fifth in time of possession (31:46).
With the 2015 National Football League season just days away, the Tennessee Titans have a good dilemma on their hands. Brocato died of cancer Tuesday in Texas at the age of 85.
Penalties were an issue, as they stalled the first two drives, which was a key reason the Titans fell into a 17-0 hole for the second time this preseason.
Whisenhunt said in his post-game presser that Andy has a spot on this team, but I don’t see the Titans paying $6.5 Million on a backup guard.
