Rovers beat Leeds in penalty shoot-out
Doncaster boss Paul Dickov insists he will not let his close friendship with Leeds counterpart Uwe Rosler get in the way when their sides lock horns in the first round of the Capital One Cup. At the other end of the pitch, Leeds nearly doubled their lead when Doncaster-born Alex Mowatt, returning to his home-town, came with in inches of connecting to a Souleymane Doukara’s low risky cross.
Goalkeeper Ross Turnbull could also make his Leeds debut on his former home ground while striker Lee Ervin is another who could make his first competitive appearance for Leeds since his move from Motherwell.
A SLICE of unwanted history for Leeds United saw the club crash out at the first-round stage of the League Cup for the first time.
However, NetBet don’t share this view, with Leeds 29/20 to win this match, whilst Doncaster are priced at 33/20 to beat their rivals at the Keepmoat Stadium.
Leeds had crept back into the game prior to Nathan Tyson’s introduction for the last 20 minutes.
However, the home side were level through Williams after Scott Wootton clattered into Cedric Evina, referee Keith Hill given no option but to point to the spot.
It went from bad to worse in the 37th minute when Cook was shown a straight red card for a two-footed tackle on Doncaster left-back Aaron Taylor-Sinclair and they were forced to play the remainder of the tie with 10 men.
Chris Wood blazed his spot kick over the bar as Leeds lost a penalty shoot-out to Doncaster Rovers.
Despite their numerical advantage, Doncaster couldn’t find a victor with James Coppinger missing the best chance when he rolled his shot just wide of a post in the first half.
Asked about his approach to cup competitions, Dickov added: “We want to win every game we can”.
Coppinger also screwed a couple of shots wide when well placed, and Williams brought a flying save from Turnbull before being unable to apply the finishing touch to a drilled cross.
