Roy Cooper announces run for NC governor
“North Carolina is better than this”, he said.
Forsyth County District Attorney Jim O’Neill’s setting his sights on Raleigh.
Democratic Attorney General Roy Cooper has kicked off his bid to become North Carolina governor and unseat Republican incumbent Pat McCrory. Josh Stein and Fayetteville attorney Tim Dun. Based on the GOP’s comments, the Democrat will have to defend both his legislative record – he served in the General Assembly for 14 years through 2000 – and actions by Cooper’s Department of Justice.
O’Neill has been Forsyth County district attorney since 2009, when then-Gov. He ran unopposed in 2010 and 2014.
“We try to focus our attention on helping and providing a voice for those who need it most, ” said O’Neill.
“Our commitment to an education system that lifts incomes and provides opportunities for everyone should be unwavering and unmatched”, said Cooper. Another is enforcing the death penalty to give closure to families of murder victims.
A Republican hasn’t been elected as North Carolina’s attorney general in more than 100 years. During the same period, his office has represented the state defending numerous laws Republicans passed but are now being challenged.
And McCrory – but not Cooper – entered a multistate lawsuit questioning President Barack Obama’s decisions last fall to shield millions of additional immigrants from deportation without legislation.
O’Neill thinks working in this arena as long as he has, has prepared him for becoming the state’s attorney general.
