Roy Hodgson: England’s exit came as a shock to all of us
Roy Hodgson’s final press conference following England’s elimination from Euro 2016 descended into farce with the former boss in no mood to answer questions on the team’s defeat to Iceland.
His future might not be with Hull anyway as the takeover talks are leaving question marks against his City future, I wouldn’t think he’ll become the next England manager even if he does end up walking away from us.
After the game, Hodgson read a short statement of resignation, but had clearly been forced to face the media.
“The process for finding a new manager under way”. I suppose that’s partly because people are still smarting from our poor performance and the defeat.
“My emotions are obvious ones”. I’m very disappointed, I didn’t see the result coming. It was never to the same extent as a defeat like that against Iceland, but I know exactly how those players will be feeling after disappointing in a major tournament.
Captain Wayne Rooney is totally committed to the Three Lions. “It wasn’t a good night, for anyone”, Hodgson said.
“Unfortunately, they are one-off events”.
“It’s hard to come out and be positive, to say positive things, after what happened”.
“I am still recovering from that”.
“As far as I’m concerned, I’ve come today”.
“Obviously none of us wanted these to be the circumstances in which he left his job”.
“For now, we congratulate Iceland for reaching the quarter final and wish them well against France at the weekend”. You have to bounce back, that is your job, but each player is different, some might take longer.
“It is too early to say (regrets)”, he said.
“Hindsight does always serve the objective of putting you in the right and if you don’t have it you find yourself very often in the wrong”. Hopefully I can stay somewhat in football but I don’t think I would go into some new job. “When I arrived I was told that players would not turn up or pull out at the last minute but I haven’t seen any of that”, said Hodgson.
“We are looking for the best person, not necessarily the best Englishman”, he said.
England Under-21 boss Gareth Southgate could take temporary charge while FA chief executive Martin Glenn, who this week conceded that he was “not a football expert”, canvasses opinion within the game.
“It’s a sorry”, said Glenn.
England soccer coach Roy Hodgson leaves the team hotel in Chantilly, France, Tuesday, June 28, 2016. It’s a much stronger team, it’s a much stronger set-up.
Hodgson also responded to claims that senior players disagreed with his team selections, saying they must have “disguised it well” if that was the case.
“I think I should be the last person to say it’s got to be a national”. “England seem brittle and we need to understand why”. That’s what happens. Why do we not do well in competitions, in a tournament, when we won every game in qualifying?
