Ruben Navarrette Jr.: Ted Cruz, a man of principle
After being exposed for using the DNC to make sure Hillary won the nomination Debbie Wasserman Schultz stepped down as head of the Dem party only to be hired by the Clinton campaign a few hours later. He said, “Under a Donald Trump administration, all lives, (repeated four times) and that means black lives, white lives, Hispanic lives, Asian lives, Christian lives and Muslim lives”. To the surprise of many, Trump not only stuck around but also secured the nomination. Glassman said Cruz’s speech “is now history, and we have to move on toward victory in November and stay focused”. Trump emphasized in his speech his opposition to the Trans-Pacific Partnership, which he said “will not only destroy our manufacturing, but it will make America subject to the rulings of foreign governments”.
Ted Cruz essentially gave a career-ending speech at the GOP convention on Wednesday night.
He adds, “I truly believe that nothing will prevent Donald Trump from doing everything in his power to create an America and to become a president that everyone can be proud of”.
The four-day Republican convention is an enduring mystery as well as a profound insight into the tight little world of Trump.
Trump said policies pursued by Clinton in Iraq, Libya, Egypt and Syria had made a bad situation worse. “Americanism, not globalism, will be our credo!” He said “Trump is a doer” and made nearly $8 billion to $9 billion in business.
One yelling protester interrupted him for a minute as security had to remove her. With all of the security, I’m wondering how she gained access?
Busted! Burns, who falsely claimed to be a member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. but was outed by journalist Marc Lamont Hill as a fraud is quoted as saying, “Listen, Republicans, it is so important that we come together to defeat Hillary Clinton and those race-baiting Democrats”.
Trump promised to “repeal and replace the disastrous Obamacare”. With his new economic policies, “trillions of dollars will start flowing into our country”, declared Trump.
“Trump is a better candidate for America and all those countries that are America’s friends, including India”, said Amar, who unsuccessfully ran for the US Congress in 2008. He’s such a great guy.
By speaking to a convention full of Trump supporters, and into a sea of boos, Cruz sent the message to every Never Trump conservative and every establishment Republican who is hesitant to vote for Trump, that he intends to be the party’s conservative standard bearer in 2020 and beyond. “I am your voice”, he intoned.
Gallagher said “it takes a team to succeed and unite” in order to win elections for Republicans. First, it was Trump’s wife, Melania, plagiarizing from-of all people-first lady Michelle Obama.
Pence delivered a terrific speech. The latest chapter is Trump’s assertion that he wouldn’t accept Cruz’s endorsement if he were to offer it at some point in the future.
The question for political hobbyists is-why did the Trump-controlled convention allow Cruz speak at all when such enmity exists between the nominee and the runner-up over unforgiven insults during the campaign. Simple people love to hear promises that would quickly solve the problems that bother them. The Republicans, for three decades the party of Reagan conservatism, are becoming the party of Donald Trump. He is a master speaker who can convince disgruntled people with chicanery and bluffs. This time it was all about the NY delegation’s booing the second-best vote-getting Republican primary candidate for asking citizens to “vote your conscience”. He has come with a new political discourse with which the Grand Old Party (GOP) veterans are unfamiliar. A CBS poll had Trump at 44% and Clinton at 43%. But can he win the White House on November 8, 2016?
