Rubio jumps into second in New Hampshire, new poll shows
Listening to his father push his credentials as a Republican front-runner, Marco Rubio’s boy Dominick couldn’t stop himself from giving a large yawn while his father was mid-speech.
Trump sounded an aggressive note as he spoke about the Democratic contest and the general election.
Trump, a real estate mogul and former reality TV star, went on Twitter on Wednesday to accuse the conservative US senator from Texas of stealing his victory in Iowa.
On Tuesday, Trump blamed the media for dismissing his “longshot, great finish”. Coming in a close third, Florida Sen.
Both Cruz and Rubio also had an eye on SC which is the first state in the South to hold a primary.
Cruz’ bigger goal in New Hampshire may be to push Rubio out of the conservative lane, where nearly all of the activist energy is in the party, by painting him as the choice of the traditional pro-business wing. They have punctured the alleged inevitability of the presidential nominations of Republican Donald Trump and Democrat Hillary Clinton.
“Ted Cruz didn’t win Iowa, he stole it”, Trump said in a series of tweets. Ted Cruz, fresh off a win at the Iowa caucus, comes in fifth place in the poll with single digits, just ahead of New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie and Ben Carson.
Why be gracious and humble when you can be childish, mean and petty? “When they said Ben Carson is out of the race and come vote for him, I thought it was bad”. Cruz later apologized for the email.
Trump also accused Cruz’s team on Twitter of sending out a mailer created to look like an official electoral document to scare Iowa voters into turning out at the caucuses.
The accusations were the latest aggressive tactic from Trump, who has courted controversy with attacks on other candidates and by urging a temporary ban on Muslims entering the United States and branding Mexican immigrants as criminals.
“I’m not going to go out and spend the tax payers money willy-nilly”, Carson promised, explaining that unlike other Republican presidential candidates he grew up understanding the value of recycling old clothes.
Cruz responded Wednesday afternoon to Trump’s Twitter rant.
One Trump supporter in the crowd, Donald Berube of Nashua, said building a border wall wasn’t just a political thing for him. @realDonaldTrump very angry w/the people of Iowa.
Cruz won 27.7% of the vote in the Republican caucus in Iowa, staking his claim to be the new standard bearer of the right.
He described Rubio as a “born leader” and praised his “optimistic” message.
Following Rubio’s finish in Iowa, several Republican rivals have stepped up their rhetorical attacks on the senator. “We’ll beat the _ out of them”, he said.
Iowa effectively took out half a dozen, including Rick Santorum and Mike Huckabee, winners of the last two Republican caucuses there.
