Rubio skips vote on budget deal, campaigns in Iowa
“Senator Rubio will talk about the future of our country, why it’s important that we have good, strong leadership in the White House and why Senator Rubio would make a good President”, said Jones. “I think that really he ought to resign or quit accepting his pay if he’s not going to come to work”. Now DeSantis, R-Ponte Vedra, is running for the Republican nomination to succeed Rubio in the U.S. Senate, and appears he’s emulating Rubio in another way – skipping votes to campaign. This one stood out more than most – for the legislation’s scope and the extent of Rubio’s criticism of it. & Rubio spokesman Alex Conant stated in a press release to NBC News source in that Rubio had little time to appraise the bill, & is in truth running for president to alter the method behind these forms of bills.
“That’s why I’m out campaigning, I want these votes to start to matter again”, Rubio said. Cruz told a conservative radio host on Thursday his vote would be “hell no”.
“In essence, not voting for it is a vote against it, although my position in it is clear, because they needed my vote to get it passed to get to 60 votes because of the Senate rules”, Rubio said in an interview with CBS News on Friday.
DeSantis’ congressional office and campaign team did not respond to questions, but on Facebook today the congressman touted his vote against the omnibus spending bill (which Senate rival David Jolly, R-Indian Shores, supported). Businessman Donald Trump and Texas Senator Ted Cruz remain ahead of Rubio. But Rubio himself did not vote.
Since January, Rubio has missed 116 of 335 votes, or about 35 percent, among the worst in the chamber. He’s also missed fewer votes, as percentage of total votes taken, than Arizona Sen.
“It was overwhelmingly going to pass so I don’t think his vote would’ve made much of a difference, had he been there”, she said. “If there’s a close vote he should be there”.
