Rubio swings back at Trump over finances
In crunching the numbers, Politico’s report acknowledges Rubio’s claims that he actually spent less than others in similar government positions as well as the senator’s assertions that he reimbursed the Florida GOP for any expenses that weren’t related to party business.
The campaign’s defense of Rubio’s spending practices came just days after Republican rival and billionaire Donald Trump publicly ridiculed Rubio, saying he was “a disaster with his credit cards” who “certainly lives beyond his means”.
The statements, released on Saturday, showed that during a 22-month period in 2005 and 2006, Rubio charged more than $22,000 in expenses to the card, the Washington Post reported. Plus Rubio could easily become a target for the rest of the baseball team sized Republican field to try and tear down, especially in upcoming debates, a role Jeb and Trump have largely been playing so far. That statement, though, is hard to believe given that Rubio has rebuffed similar requests for years. The Florida senator quickly pivoted to his preferred talking points-“I’m not anxious about my finances; I’m anxious about the finances of everyday Americans”-and the debate moved on”.
In fact, Rubio made the distinction between a credit card and his American Express, which he said was a charge card, implying that it was paid every month.
The rise of Mr. Rubio, Florida Republican, has been met with increased attacks and sharper scrutiny from his rivals and the media. He also had to repay $2,400 in travel expenses that he billed to the party and state taxpayers. But with Bush sliding in the polls and questions about his long-term viability as a candidate, Rubio loyalists say that a conversion is taking place in this fundraising Mecca.
Marco Rubio ran for and was elected to the U.S. Senate by Floridians.
The records released were from 2005 and 2006.
Harris said that’s because Rubio didn’t charge any personal items to the card during that time. “It was American Express”, Rubio told reporters in New Hampshire.
Nine purchases from florists for a total of $709 over the two-year period. The Florida Republican Party was responsible for paying off the cards on a monthly basis.
‘When the statements were later leaked during my Senate campaign, they invited press skepticism, confused a few of the public and allowed an opponent to suggest the party had paid for personal expenses, ‘ Rubio wrote in his book, An American Son.
“Instead of accusing the Senator of having a weak stance on immigration and making personal attacks about the Senator’s finances, perhaps Donald Trump should be more concerned about explaining his own bankruptcies and flip flops on immigration”, Taylor Boutelle, Director of Communications for UCF Students for Rubio, said. “I obviously don’t come from a wealthy family”. (There was $117,000 in charges previously disclosed and today’s release covered another $65,000.) Of that total, $23,252.50 in charges were for personal expenses, according to Rubio.
The Rubio campaign said the statements did go to his home for the first two years and then for the next two years they were sent to Republican Party headquarters.
