Rumors of Plainfield School Lockdown False
The school corporation says administrators worked with police through Wednesday evening on this investigation and found no “credible evidence” to support the rumor.
The messages followed a Facebook post from the superintendent of the Danville district Wednesday night that said administrators had investigated an “unconfirmed rumor” that a student had planned to bring a gun to school Thursday.
The Plainfield Community School Corporation posted a statement to its website that said school officials and the Plainfield Police Department have worked through the night to address the threat. The district has more than 265,000 students.
A pair of school districts in IN closed schools Thursday following threats directed at their institutions.
Thursday also marked the end of the semester for Danville students.
Wright said further threats were made on Facebook after the arrests, apparently by another person.
“We don’t know that these two incidents are related at all”, he said.
Police collaborated with the Federal Bureau of Investigation, and determined the potential threat targeted a school district in Plainfield, Indiana.
Plainfield School District 202 was contacted and at no time were there any students or staff in any immediate danger, police said.
Shafer agreed, “We believe that it’s a possibility the person who is making the threats at Plainfield may also be the same person making the threats related to Danville”.
Plainfield is located less than 20 miles southwest of Indianapolis.
School districts in Houston, Dallas, Fort Lauderdale and Miami decided that emailed threats were not credible, and were similar to ones sent to schools in New York City and Los Angeles earlier this week. As a precaution, the Los Angeles district closed its schools for the day, while NY officials quickly deemed the threat non-credible and kept schools open.
