Russell Westbrook triple-double tally: No. 11

Here are Westbrook’s last five games – which again, were all Thunder wins.

Oklahoma City Thunder guard Russell Westbrook is threatening to become the first National Basketball Association player to average a triple-double since Cincinnati Royals Hall of Famer Oscar Robertson achieved the double-figure points, assists and rebounds mark during the 1961-62 National Basketball Association season.

The Hawks have lost six straight and nine of the past 10 games.

Only one player in NBA history has averaged a triple-double for an entire season – the legendary Oscar Robertson, who did so way back in the 1962, when basketball uniforms featured belts and itty-bitty shorts. “I never take it for granted every time I step on the floor”, Westbrook said. It was his 10th triple-double of the season and the 47th of his career. When the ball gets swung from one side to the next, do you move to the other side?

Westbrook recorded his sixth straight triple-double.

A turnaround jump shot from DeRozan with 24 seconds remaining closed the gap to five, and he followed that up with a 3-pointer 10 seconds later that looked to put the result in doubt, but after review he was ruled out of bounds. “He’s doing an incredible job”. Failing to shoot well doesn’t mean failing to play well, but the Thunder offense needs its best player to do everything, and early in the third quarter he was still just 1 of 8 from the field. He’s not worrying about his stats; he’s worrying about everybody’s stats. In this game, he made 6 of 12 shots and 4 of 7 3-pointers.

“He’s just an unbelievable player”.

Shaking off a cold shooting start, Westbrook had 16 points in the third quarter as the Thunder outscored the Hawks 28-15 to lead 83-69.

“I thought we tired a little bit [in] the last two or three minutes”, Donovan said.

They’ve dropped 10 of 11 overall. The Thunder have won all five games during Westbrook’s triple-double stretch.

What Steven Adams did in Atlanta was remarkable; what his OKC Thunder team-mate Russell Westbrook continues to do on a daily basis is nearing the miraculous.

Come to think of it, Westbrook’s former partner Kevin Durant is having a good season as well. “It’s something the league hasn’t seen like this in a long, long time”, Thunder coach Billy Donovan said. “I’m very, very blessed to be able to play the game I love”.
