Russia Launches More Cruise Missiles From Caspian To Syria
Bosses at Arbil and Sulaimaniyah airports confirmed that flights were suspended – citing the danger of Russian Missiles.
The Russian air force and navy have ratcheted up raids against IS targets in Syria since last Tuesday after Moscow identified the October 31 Russian plane crash over Egypt’s Sinai Peninsula a terrorist attack.
Russian Federation has been conducting a bombing campaign in Syria since September 30, the country’s largest foreign intervention outside the former Soviet Union since the occupation of Afghanistan in 1979.
“At least 36 people were killed and dozens more injured in more than 70 raids carried out by Russian and Syrian planes against several districts in Deir Ezzor”, said Rami Abdel Rahman of the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights monitoring group.
Russian Federation has also doubled the number of jets it has based in government-held territory in Syria to 69 over the past few days, Shoigu said.
Shoigu said the Caspian flotilla warships on Friday launched 18 cruise missiles at terrorist positions in Syria hitting seven targets.
Boris Zilberman, an expert on Russia and the Middle East at the Foundation for Defense of Democracies, said that the video points to continued military cooperation between Russia and Iran and also suggests that Russia may be launching cruise missiles into Syria from Iranian airspace. The strike was part of a massive missile and bombing blitz by Russia over the first four days of the week that has inflicted serious damage on the ISIS militants there, according to an announcement Friday by Russia Defense Minister Sergey Shoigu.
The bombs had messages on the side, one of them read “That’s for Paris” and the other “For our guys” referencing to the attacks against Paris and the Russian Airplane. The call followed Putin’s order to the military to co-operate with the French “like with allies”. The recent attacks across Paris seemed to have only added fuel to the Russian zeal to take the battle to the Islamic terror outfit.
“Degrading this source of revenue will reduce ISIL’s ability to fund their military and terrorist operations, ” said Colonel Steven Warren, the spokesman for the US-led coalition in Baghdad, using another acronym for the group.
“Only when it struck Paris did President Hollande start to think” about joining an alliance with countries including Russian Federation to combat IS, Shaaban added.
