Russia opposes UN resolution for tribunal for MH17 crash
Ukraine and the West suspect it was destroyed by a Russian surface-to-air missile fired by Russian soldiers or Russia-backed separatists fighting in eastern Ukraine.
“A very detailed investigation is still on-going”, Najib said during a memorial to mark the first anniversary of the tragedy at the Bunga Raya Complex at KL worldwide airport.
“I know it’s nearly a year, but we still feel sad, even though we know we have to accept the way things are”, she said.
The council would “establish an worldwide tribunal for the sole objective of prosecuting persons responsible for crimes connected with the downing of Malaysia Airlines flight MH17 on 17 July 2014”, reads the draft text.
The Boeing 777 passenger jet was travelling between Amsterdam and Kuala Lumpur when it was shot down in eastern Ukraine on 17 July.
Mueller said MAS had made flight arrangements for some 85 family members to attend a remembrance ceremony in Canberra, Australia and Nieuwegein, Netherlands on July 17.
The Transport Minister, however, did not state what the findings of the investigators were as the report was extensive and they would need at least a month to scrutinise the report.
Speaking at the memorial, Mr Najib said the global criminal probe into the downing of the plane was ongoing and could be completed by the end of the year.
Many became emotional when the names of the passengers scrolled across screens in tribute to the dead.
“Malaysia is single-minded in making sure we find out who the people responsible for this tragedy are”, he said.
He said the motion for the resolution and the criminal tribunal which involved cooperation between the Malaysian goverment, Australia, the Netherlands, Belgium and Ukraine had been circulated to the 15 members of the UN Security Council to implement the voting process.
Malaysia told the Security Council last week that it was ready to move ahead with the proposed tribunal despite resistance from Russian Federation.
Russian UN Ambassador Vitaly Churkin claims that such resolution has “no future whatsoever”, besides ge is sure that Western countries want to make a political show out of this, which will “only damage efforts to find the guilty parties”.
