Russian athlete disqualified after winning marathon
The global Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) has announced the team tasked with overseeing the reform of the All-Russian Athletics Federation (ARAF), following Friday’s provisional suspension of Russian track and field athletes from worldwide competition.
WADA’s hierarchy will spend much of the gathering at the posh Colorado resort assessing the findings of its independent report into allegations of widespread doping, corruption and collusion in Russian athletics.
Pole vault world record-holder Yelena Isinbayeva and other Russian track and field stars came together yesterday to decry the suspension of their country’s athletics federation.
“The event organizer is disqualifying his record and no appearance or prize money will be paid”, the IAAF told the Associated Press by email Tuesday, adding that it would write to the Russian federation seeking disciplinary proceedings against Ugarov.
Norwegian anti-doping expert Rune Andersen, who is in charge of a five-person inspection panel, attended the World Anti-Doping Agency’s meeting in Colorado on Tuesday.
Over the weekend, IOC president Thomas Bach and the head of the Russian Olympic Committee, Alexander Zhukov, reached agreement on a roadmap for Russia to follow to become compliant with rules of the IAAF and WADA. No time frame was set.
Pound’s independent commission concluded the government must have known about rampant doping schemes in Russia’s system. “But we just feel they can’t, because of the damage that’s been done to both their systems and to their credibility”.
Pound spoke to members of the World Anti-Doping Agency, who meet Wednesday to decide whether to decertify RUSADA. “If they start fighting over it, fine, take your time”. WADA doesn’t have direct say in the eligibility of Russia’s track team.
That falls under the jurisdiction of track’s governing body, the IAAF, which itself is being investigated by the independent commission.
“We said we’ll show you the road out of this and it’s up to you whether you take it”, said Pound.
