Russian Federation announces economic sanctions against Turkey over jet downing
Mr Erdogan’s expression of regret was the first since Tuesday’s incident in which Turkish F-16 jets shot down the Russian jet on grounds that it had violated Turkey’s airspace despite repeated warnings to change course.
President Vladimir Putin said Russian planes were easily identifiable and the jet’s flight co-ordinates had been passed on to Turkey’s ally, the US.
In an apparent shift in the Russian position, Putin said Moscow is now willing to cooperate with opposition groups fighting ISIS, which could mean backing rebel forces opposed to Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, who Russia considers its only ally in the region.
Putin on Friday discussed the downing with his security council, particularly the “increased tensions over Syria against the background of Turkey’s aggressive and unpredictable actions”, his spokesman Dmitry Peskov said. The pledge came with the condition that Russian and American leaders would have to meet to discuss the downed Russian warplane, which Turkey is responsible for.
He said there was “no doubt” that oil from “terrorist-controlled” territory in Syria was making its way across the border into Turkey.
Mr Erdogan also renewed a call to Russian president Vladimir Putin for a face-to-face meeting in Paris on the sidelines of the Global Climate Summit on Monday, saying it would be an opportunity to restore relations.
His government drafted up new economic sanctions against Turkey on Thursday, in retaliation for the attack.
On Friday Russia suspended its visa-free arrangement with Turkey.
Unal says Erdogan tried to contact Putin, but his request was denied. The US leads the anti-Daesh coalition, in which Turkey is member. Russian Federation is also dropping bombs on ISIS.
The Russian leader welcomed Francois Hollande to Moscow in the wake of twin ISIS terror strikes against both nations – one on a Russian passenger jet over Egypt and the other in Paris.
He said Russian and Syrian radar data proved that a Turkish jet had fired a missile from 2km (1.2 miles) inside Syria.
Moreover, Putin dismissed as “rubbish” Turkey’s claim that it didn’t know the nationality of the plane when the Turkish Air Force hit it.
“We are truly saddened by this incident”, Mr. Erdogan said while addressing supporters in the western city of Balikesir on Saturday, AP reported.
