Russian Federation says extremist targets bombed in Syria
The “armed forces of Syria” fight on behalf of Syrian President Bashar Assad, whom the USA has said must step aside if the terror group ISIS (also known as the Islamic State) is to be defeated.
USA and Russian officials say they’ll open communications between their military groups in the region, to avoid accidents or potential clashes.
“The representatives of the coalition command have always been saying that their targets are ISIL, al-Nusra, and other terrorist groups”, he said, referring to an Islamic State acronym.
Russian President Vladimir Putin said Wednesday that Moscow must act preemptively to destroy militants in Syria before they present a threat closer to home.
It reported that Alexandre Orlov dismissed allegations civilians were killed in the strikes, telling France Info radio that “there has been a certain war of disinformation for a few time” and insisting Russian Federation was “acting transparently”. Mr Lavrov said that “we aren’t aware of such information”. “We carefully make sure that these target strikes are precise”.
According to U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry, the US will not object the Russian attacks on Al Qaeda and Islamic State groups but would show “grave concerns” if other rebel groups will also be targeted and included in the attack.
The warplanes started their mission shortly after the Russian Parliament unanimously voted to allow Vladimir Putin to use the air force to target militants.
“The Homs area is crucial to Assad’s control of western Syria,”Reuters explains”. “Strikes of that kind would question Russia’s real intentions fighting ISIL or protecting the Assad regime”, he added, referring to Syrian President Bashar Assad.
An activist in the city of Kafranbel, Raed Fares, says two airstrikes outside of the city were carried out by Russian-operated jets.
“So it was very obvious that the Russian intervention was to support the regime, to support more killings inside Syria, and will create a more chaotic atmosphere,” he said.
“As far as strikes against Islamic State are concerned, Russian planes can hardly spot the difference”, Mr Baev said.
Syria’s civil war has raged for four years, with an array of armed groups fighting to overthrow the government.
The statement was carried by the official IRNA news agency.
