Russian Federation says will respond if USA places new nukes in Germany
“This is definitely another step, unfortunately a very serious one, towards the escalation of tensions on the European continent”, Peskov said.
Following German media reports, US Department of Defense spokesman Army Lt. Col. Joe Sowers told Sputnik that Washington believed that its nuclear weapon deployments were fully compliant with USA treaty obligations.
Peskov said such a move would “could alter the balance of power in Europe” and would demand that Russian Federation “take necessary countermeasures to restore the strategic balance and parity”.
Budget documents indicate that the base would be provided with funding for the forthcoming storage and deployment of the new B61-12s.
A military source said a final decision would be taken after “detailed analysis of the potential threat”. “The steps taken will be needed for ensuring Russia’s national security and re-establishment of the strategic balance”, he said.
“At the same time, deployed tactical nuclear means of the USA remain in Europe – not only in Germany, but also in Belgium, the Netherlands, Italy and Turkey”.
Russian concerns appear to centre on the fact the newer version of the bomb is considered more appropriate for tactical use.
A Pentagon spokesman, Navy Capt. Jeff Davis, said the US does not discuss the locations, numbers or details of any nuclear weapons, including those outside the country. “Unfortunately, we now do not have a willing partner for such a negotiation”.
