Russian TV Leaks Secret Nuclear Torpedo Plans
While Russian President Vladimir Putin announces a nuclear weapons race with the USA, Moscow’s chief spokesman has confirmed that that Russian state-owned channels accidentally broadcast the design of a secret nuclear torpedo system: a drone submarine that could bypass North Atlantic Treaty Organisation radars and all existing defense systems to attack coastlines.
The submarine would “defeat important economic objects of an enemy in coastal zones, bringing guaranteed and unacceptable losses on the country’s territory by forming a wide area of radioactive contamination incompatible with conducting military, economic or any other activities there for a long period of time”, it said.
The channels later removed the footage, which was shot during a meeting on Monday in Sochi.
“Certain secrets indeed were caught on camera”, Dmitry Peskov told reporters Wednesday, according to Russian news agency Tass. “We hope that this won’t happen again”, he said.

According to the blurred information provided in the slide, the system represents a massive torpedo, designated as “self-propelled underwater vehicle”, with a range of up to 10 thousand kilometers and capable of operating at a depth of up to 1,000 meters. He said, “This is a gentle hint at the kind of asymmetric response Russian Federation is prepared to execute should aggravation prevail over a reasonable tradeoff in its standoff with the West in general, and the U.S.in particular”.
During his meetings in Sochi with military officials earlier this week, Putin said the “true purpose” of the planned U.S.-led missile shield is “to neutralize the potential of other nuclear states… primarily Russian Federation”.
Russia’s secret plans for a nuclear torpedo are no longer secret, reports The Guardian. “Such systems have already begun to enter the military this year”. The warhead is cobalt-59, which would turn into the hyper-radioactive cobalt-60 isotope upon detonation. That’s why it’s a bit disconcerting that a state-sponsored Russian TV program “leaked” images of a potentially devastating new weapon with nuclear capabilities.
Podvig said the apparent deliberate leak of the Status-6 details looks menacing, irrespective of how realistic the project is from the technological viewpoint.
“It’s a “remember me” to the United States from the late Andrei Sakharov”, he said, referring to a Soviet physicist who created the first Soviet nuclear weapon, and later became an outspoken dissident and anti-nuclear activist. This is the way they believe they could show their strength and resolve.
