Rutgers DT Darius Hamilton out for season
Earlier this week, ESPN ran a segment on its website, asking simply: Kansas-Rutgers: Worst Game Ever? Most notably, Rutgers head coach Kyle Flood is in the midst of a three-game suspension.
Kansas offense vs. Rutgers defense: Offense hasn’t been a problem for the Jayhawks, who’ve scored 61 points in two games Penn State torched RU’s defense for 330 yards rushing and the Kinner-led running attack is averaging 240 yards per game for Kansas. Sophomore running back Josh Hicks (258 yards, two touchdowns) is the Scarlet Knights’ top threat on the ground. The game is also airing as a live stream online.
In a football game that was neither aesthetically pleasing nor all that dramatic, Kansas suffered a 27-14 loss to Rutgers, a reeling program without its coach on the sideline.
With that said, the Jayhawks should be able to stack the box to some degree. His limited action brings up the possibility of a redshirt season.
While the verdict is still out on whether or not Rettig’s strong arm and collegiate debut 9-of-11, 110-yard and one-touchdown effort through the air back in the opener merits a second look, Laviano remains the starter for the third straight week.
Expectations aren’t high for Kansas this year, but a win on the road would do a lot for the young Jayhawks players and first time head coach David Beaty. The was the context for this stretch in the first half, when Rutgers quarterback Chris Laviano tossed an interception in the end zone, and Kansas followed by fumbling on its next play, recovering the football, and then throwing its own pick one play later. Why Kansas Will Win Kansas needs all the help it can get to pull off the win, and it’ll get it with several mistakes and takeaways coming from the Rutgers team happy to give them up. In their last two loses, Rutgers has turned it over five times, good for a -5 turnover margin. Kansas is ranked 119th nationally against the pass and 111th against the run. The Jayhawks will need to apply pressure and the secondary must capitalize with big plays if they want to upset Rutgers. Kickoff is set for 11 a.m. central time on the Big Ten Network.
