Rutgers fires football coach, athletic director
The team’s seniors received their sendoff at a meeting on Monday morning.
Of her final save, Murphy said “there was nothing that made me go that way”.
Flood was actually lucky to make it this long at New Jersey’s flagship university.
Norries Wilson, the football team’s associate head coach, will serve as interim head coach. In addition, seven Rutgers players were arrested this season for offenses varying from home invasion to assault. His team finished 4-8 on the year, but more damaging to Flood’s employment was the three-game ban he received for violating the school’s academic compliance policy.
“This has been a tough year”, Flood said. The Rutgers president also announced Pat Hobbs as the immediate replacement for Hermann, moving the former Seton Hall law school dean and short-term Pirates athletic director from an interim solution to a permanent one in the same day. Barchi said Hobbs signed a five-year contract worth $560,000 annually. “I think that her being our leader, we’re going to be the best team that we can be”.
Following three and outs from both sides, another Maryland drive came to an end when Brandon Ross was blown up behind the line of scrimmage for a loss on third down thanks to a miscommunication on the offensive line. “I’ve felt like that since Day One ever since Coach Flood took over in 2012 when I first got here”, Leonte Carroo said.
During a forgettable season, Maryland’s defense had been maligned at times, with a series of dismal performances mixed in with solid outings.
Hermann took over as athletic director in 2013 after the Mike Rice scandal led to Tim Pernetti’s firing. He went 4-12 in conference games, including a 1-7 mark this season, since Rutgers joined the Big Ten in 2014. After her hire, troubles from her tenure as women’s volleyball coach at Tennessee surfaced.
Her first few months at Rutgers were tumultuous and she never seemed to gain the full trust of the administration. When Flood was under investigation in August and ultimately suspended, Hermann made no public comments on the situation beyond prepared statements.
This is not the same Rutgers team that ran into a buzz-saw against Virginia a year ago.
Flood succeeded Greg Schiano as coach and completed his fourth season on Saturday.
This season, however, has been a wreck.
Flood did not blame the defensive ineptitude on the surplus of underclassmen who had been thrust into prominent roles, but he did mention it. The counter play resulted in the Terps fourth rushing touchdown of 40 or more yards.
The Cavaliers cruised through the first three rounds, outscoring their opponents Howard, UNC-Wilmington and USC by a combined score of 11-1.
And in one final act of defiance, Flood summoned his personal pet project, quarterback Chris Laviano, to ensure that everyone knew that Flood was his own man, even if Hayden Rettig deserved more than one lousy handoff yesterday afternoon.
Scarff’s first career touchdown gave the Scarlet Knights a 38-27 lead late in the third quarter, but it would not be enough to hold off Maryland, which limited Rutgers to 10 second-half points after its biggest first half of the season.
“There’s a lot of pressure in this league”, Barchi said.
