Rutgers vs. Wisconsin: Who has the edge?
Rutgers coach Kyle Flood did his best to put a positive spin on his team’s situation following a 48-10 drubbing at the hands of Wisconsin on Saturday, noting that the Scarlet Knights have a third of the season remaining. Gause has been arguably the best defensive player of the season for Rutgers and he looks to be getting better each week.
Early in the second quarter of Saturday’s game, Rutgers quarterback Chris Laviano took a shot downfield to try to move the chains against Wisconsin on 3rd-and-5 from the Scarlet Knights’ 35-yard line. “But we’ve had our fair share”, coach Paul Chryst said.
Stave finished 13 of 25 for 217 yards and a touchdown. His 58-yard third-quarter run down to the Rutgers 4-yard-line was the team’s longest play from scrimmage this season.
It was a Halloween to remember for Clement following his eagerly-anticipated return from sports hernia surgery. A injury must be season-ending, and must occur in the first half of the season.
The Badgers could certainly use Clement to return to the type of workload he was expected to have when the season began.
“No comment”, Rettig said when asked if he felt he should have been in the game sooner, an opinion held by a vocal segment of the fan base on social media sites and message boards. “I give our players a lot of credit”. If Clement plays I’d say they’re about even, but if he has to sit out again I think the Badgers will have to make a lot out of a little once again. Stave has played relatively well this year.
Given this development, Urban Meyer may have no choice but to entrust the offense back to Jones for not only the next couple of games but for the remainder of the season as well.
Will Wisconsin pull off the big win or can Rutgers find a way to keep this one close?
Next up for UW (7-2, 4-1) is a road game against Maryland, which was 0-3 in the league and 2-5 overall entering its game later Saturday against Iowa. Joe “The Show” Schobert was well contained by Illinois and Rutgers, and it has opened up a plethora of opportunities in the last two weeks for guys like Biegel, Jack Cichy and the redshirt freshman middle linebacker T.J. Edwards.
That said, both of these teams have been inconsistent, and Wisconsin’s offense – which will likely have Stave back against Rutgers – hasn’t run anyone out of the building, while the Rutgers offense has been potent at times. The Badgers are already bowl-eligible, a goal that Scarlet Knights would like to reach. Wisconsin won’t have a 1,000-yard rusher this year for the first time since 2004, but Clement is a top-level talent.
