Ryan Fitzpatrick named AFC offensive player of the week
Following his signature performance of his rookie campaign, Marcus Mariota and the Titans will take on the Jets today at 1:00PM ET. The first half of the game was pure domination in every phase of the game.
Before Thanksgiving, patience was wearing thin with the play of Jets quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick, who had completed less than half his passes and four interceptions over consecutive losses. The defense was able to force a three-and-out on the following drive by the Titans.
Sure the Jets should have won this game.
First of all, there’s the obvious Jets connection – Keyshawn was on the Jets when the book was released. Mariota then connected with McCluster for a successful two-point conversion pass, cutting the deficit to 27-8. The Titans blocked the extra point, but Da’Norris Searcy was offside and, 5 yards closer, Bullock made his next attempt. By shutting down Mariota’s running lanes and sticking a cornerback on Walker, defensive coordinator Kacy Rodgers ensured the Titans would gain no traction. Marshall and Decker combined for 13 catches, 199 yards and two touchdowns, including nine catches for 159 yards and both touchdowns during a first half in which Marshall and Decker got open at will. Decker was all alone in the end zone on his 16-yard touchdown catch while Marshall and quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick caught the Titans unprepared late in the second quarter with a quick snap and screen pass that Marshall turned into a 69-yard touchdown catch. The following drive by Tennessee led to the end of the half.
If it wasn’t for a trick wildcat play in which running back Antonio Andrews hit Marcus Mariota for a 41-yard touchdown reception, the game could have easily been a shutout. Safety Calvin Pryor slipped on the coverage, leaving Mariota completely uncovered.
Andrews would have been a major fantasy bust if not for a very ridiculous play. Fitzpatrick will throw for at least 300 yards and three touchdowns in the game and will be a major difference maker for the Jets.
The defeat dropped the Giants to 5-7, but in the terrible NFC East, they are still tied for first place in the division with the Philadelphia Eagles and Washington, who are also 5-7. The Chiefs face the Ravens next followed by the Browns and the Raiders. The Jets are 1-3 in those games while the Steelers are 3-1.
There is no question that the Jets are the better all-around football team and should come through with a big win. Those two wins snapped a two-game losing streak and put the Jets right back into the postseason picture. With the way they’re playing now, it definitely seems possible. They are in the middle of the race for an AFC wild-card spot in a season when few expected them to be real contenders.
Added Orakpo: “We were scrambling and trying to get lined up”. “We don’t look at any game as a trap game”. Bowles said Smith was scheduled for an MRI on Monday. That’s less than 1/3 of his targets caught.
What was concerning is the lack of effort as the Jets pulled away. It would be robbery if Wilkerson doesn’t make a trip to Hawaii in 2016. Marshall leads the team with 10 touchdown receptions this season and six of them have come in the last five games. “I got like five of them to hand out to wide receivers and make an Instagram post, something cool”. Fitzpatrick has 22 TD passes and needs three to set single-season career mark…. Todd Bowles has created a stingy defense and a chain moving offense, but, what kind of blueprint can the Tennessee Titans utilize to find a way to beat the New York Jets?
Only Washington (6-7) is worse at minus-10, according to SportingCharts.com. A starting quarterback one day, unemployed the next. The Jets will be playing the Dallas Cowboys, New England Patriots, and Buffalo Bills in the next three weeks, and with the playoffs on the line, winning is key.
