Ryan: ‘Going to Have to Get Used to’ Trump’s Tweets

He said he’s especially proud of the order that authorizes the removal of unauthorized immigrants with criminal records.

During a private meeting of House and Senate Republicans at their annual policy retreat, Ryan said House committees will mark up a reconciliation package in the next couple of weeks that will both repeal President Obama’s healthcare law and replace portions of it, according to several lawmakers in the room.

On the campaign trail, Trump repeatedly said that Mexico would pay for the wall, but in recent weeks he and other Republican leaders began emphasizing that US taxpayers would actually pay for the wall at first, and Mexico would reimburse them. Trump has insisted Mexico will reimburse the US for the costs, through undetermined new measures affecting trade and tax policy with Mexico.

Trump avoided mentioning the false voter fraud Thursday, saying only he would work toward keeping “the ballot box safe from illegal voting”.

Congress will pay for “the construction of the physical barrier on the border”, Ryan said.

McConnell and Ryan did not say whether Congress would offset the wall’s cost by cutting other programs or simply add to huge budget deficits that Republicans have criticized for years.

Asa Khalif, head of Black Lives Matter Pennsylvania, said the organization will be there Thursday.

“When we found out that the Republican retreat was going to be coming to Philly”, said The People United USA representative Katey Dyck, “we had a lot of interest from our membership in organizing actions around that visit”. And most Republicans in Congress are reluctant to relitigate those issues.

The party is “still developing what this thing is going to look like”, Senator Jim Risch of Idaho told reporters Thursday, Bloomberg reported.

“Now it’s gonna happen”, Trump said. He said such a plan should be “encompassing, it’s got to be coherent” with technology including drones. “I’ve spoken more to this president in the last few days than I did to the last president in the last six months”, Ryan told Greta Van Susteren earlier in the week. “Border security is a serious, serious issue and problem”. Ryan has said he’s seen no evidence to suggest voter fraud on the scale Trump suggests.

Trump has also advocated broad corporate tax reform, which the president says can jump-start the economy and encourage businesses to invest in American manufacturing.

While the GOP leadership’s chart did mention the supplemental, Congress is staying out of the nitty-gritty of plans to actually build the wall, given its already full plate of other priorities.
