Ryan: Obama wants to ‘go around’ the Congress on immigration
As The Washington Post noted, the 2013 bipartisan comprehensive immigration bill created by the Senate’s Gang of Eight has been sitting in the Republican-controlled House for the last 29 months. There’s a whole list of targets, but the main one is immigrants.
That committee is nearly always stacked with speaker loyalists, in this case, numerous members who were loyal to Boehner are now loyal to Ryan. They all agree that government spending ought to be radically curtailed, but a few of them thought that defaulting on the government’s debt was a good way to get that done, while others thought that was nuts. Such is the challenge of the GOP’s historic congressional election victories. Yet even with that, House Republicans refused to go along. “So throwing Republicans under the bus is not part of my job description”. In interviews broadcast over the weekend, he said Republicans have been lacking a vision and said he would play the lead role in presenting an alternative agenda to what is being offered by President Obama and Democrats over the coming year. That will most certainly not be an easy task. “He repeated his claim that he can’t get anything done on immigration reform because blasted the new Speaker” President Obama is “untrustworthy”. And the bolder Ryan gets, the more troublesome it could be for the GOP nominee. But one thing that’s certain is there won’t be immigration reform any time, soon, he says. Mr. Obama has vowed to reject that move, raising the prospect of another stalemate over government funding.
The president’s executive order – going it alone, as Mr. Ryan said – is tied up in the courts.
Heck, even Obama repeatedly said that until it became politically convenient for him to take action anyway.
“We have a Senate that has a very hard process when it comes to actually getting bills voted on”, he said.
In September, however, Boehner chose to hold similar listening sessions over several weeks with House Republicans to discuss how to address Planned Parenthood after an anti-abortion group released videos showing officials discussing the transfer of fetal tissue. In other words, he wants to hide Ex-Im in a larger bill and hope voters will not notice that Republicans went along with Democrats to reward their big business cronies.
One area of reform that could likely be agreed upon between Obama and Congress is prison reform.
Americans have every right to be skeptical. Why are taxpayer dollars being used to jail those who shouldn’t be here in the first place?
It’s downright tragic that Disney workers who are American citizens are being laid off while they train their foreign replacements on the H-1B visa program. It’s no wonder that conservatives are outraged at this president and Congress for allowing this to happen.
This executive action is what Ryan is complaining about.
“He has already demonstrated he is not serious about enforcing the law”.
Ryan and this Congress would be wise to at least take on the issue of securing the border, if not visa reform. But the problem with Republican ideas in recent years hasn’t been that there isn’t a unified party behind them, or that they haven’t been sold aggressively enough.
