Ryanair bans duty free alcohol on flights to Ibiza
A message from Ryanair to passengers flying to Ibiza said: “Customers will not be allowed to carry alcohol on board and all cabin baggage will be searched at the boarding gates”.
While duty-free alcohol is still available for purchase, it must now be stored in with the regular luggage.
‘If the alcohol is unsuitable for placing in the hold (eg a plastic bag) then customers will be required to dispose of the alcohol in the bins provided.’.
The company is also making the effort to erradicate drunken behaviour by refusing entrance to drunken passengers.
Anyone attempting to hide alcohol “will be denied travel without refund or compensation”, the email added.
Ryanair has banned passengers bringing duty-free alcohol onto flights to Ibiza from the UK.
Airport duty manager Stephen Melia said: “There have been some incidents of people complaining about people drinking too much on the Ibiza flight”.
Customers travelling on the route from Castle Donington have been contacted via email to make them aware of the changes to Ryanair’s policy.
Ryanair revealed the ban in emails to customers, saying it would benefit “the comfort and safety of all passengers”.
Travellers will either have to stow alcohol in the hold free of charge or throw it away before flying.
Ryanair operates flights to Ibiza from Bristol, East Midlands, Stansted, Birmingham, Liverpool, Glasgow Prestwick, Manchester and Leeds Bradford airports, all of which will be subject to the ban.
Passengers will still be able to buy alcohol during flights.
The budget airline has been backed in its decision by the Civil Aviation Authority who stated that its a criminal offence to be drunk on board an aircraft or to disobey the orders of the captain.
