S. Koreans Injured in Seattle Traffic Accident

Ride the Ducks Seattle President Brian Tracey told the media that he was still gathering information about the accident and would be making a detailed statement in the future. The Learning Center at North Seattle College became a triage center to help students with physical and emotional needs.
Seattle police conducted a preliminary evaluation of the drivers Thursday and said they did not find any evidence of impairment. He wasn’t sure whether the duck boats would be allowed to continue in the city but said the NTSB was interested in duck-boat safety because such vehicles are operating in other cities. The bus was carrying students that were part of a foreign student program at North Seattle College. “People lying in the street”, Volm said. She says the uninjured students and staff were taken back to campus, where counsellors were on hand. “She said there were one or two Vietnamese students on the bus in the crash but that they weren’t badly hurt”.
“We didn’t have a chance to develop a long-term relationship with these students”, college President Warren Brown said.
Bellair Charters, based in Ferndale, Whatcom County, was last inspected by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration in 2013 and received a satisfactory rating, according to the UTC. “Ride The Ducks says on its website their vehicles have no seat belts”.
While there was no immediate official word about the cause of the crash, some noted the safety of the amphibious boats has been questioned before. Brown did not name the other victim – a 17-year-old from China – because she is a minor, but her family has been notified.

Seattle Mayor Ed Murray said Friday that Ride the Ducks has agreed to keep its six-wheeled tour vehicles off the roads after the crash. After the crash he quickly began helping others until emergency crews arrived. When he knew she was OK, he started helping others who were injured.
Another witness, John Mundell says he was at the south end of the bridge when he heard a screech and twisted metal and saw what appeared to be a few dozen people on the ground. “I wanted to try to help”. Several people were critically injured.
The people on the charter bus suffered the majority of the significant injuries, a fire department spokeswoman said.
Officials have not said what caused the crash Thursday.
The military-style tour vehicle that can also be operated on water belongs to a tour company called Ride the Ducks, which offers tours known for exuberant drivers and guides who play loud music and quack through speakers as they lead tourists around the city. People with the most serious injuries were sent to Harborview Medical Center.
