Sacramento Kings to add Nancy Lieberman to coaching staff
The Sacramento Kings will reportedly hire Nancy Lieberman as an assistant coach, making her the second female to coach in the National Basketball Association.
“Definitely, I’m going to offer her a job”, Kings vice president Vlade Divac said.
Her coaching position with the expansion team marked the first time a woman had coached a men’s team under the NBA’s umbrella.
The addition comes during a busy off-season for the Kings. “I would be honored to be a part of their staff and organization and I loved everything we did in Summer league”. “I think is a nice opportunity for her”.
Lieberman has a storied and expansive basketball history. She briefly played in the WNBA during its inaugural season in 1997. Lieberman was a three-time All-American for the Lady Monarchs and the first two-time victor of the Wade Trophy as the top women’s player. Lieberman told the Bee that she will accept the offer. Then, as you probably heard, just a few days ago the Arizona Cardinals became the trailblazer in their league when they madeJen Welter the first female coach in the NFL.
The Iowa Energy of the D-League also named Nicki Gross as an assistant coach Thursday, the lone female assistant coach in the NBA’s development system.
