Sacramento Kings trade guard Ray McCallum to San Antonio Spurs for 2nd Round Pick
McCallum was dealt to the Spurs for a future second-round pick Thursday, ESPN reports. He could wind up leading the second unit as one of the backup point guards (along with Patty Mills), with minutes likely coming if he proves he can contribute. The Spurs traded for Ray McCallum of the Sacramento Kings, adding some additional depth to the roster for the 2015-16 National Basketball Association season. He ended up averaging 7.4 points, 2.8 assists and 2.6 rebounds per game. Joseph, who served primarily as the back-up point guard to Tony Parker and played admirably when Parker was hurt, provided the Spurs with 18.3 minutes per game during the 2014-15 season. He did improve his overall shooting percentage to 43.8 percent from 37.7 percent the season before.
McCallum is the kind of player that will find his grove in the Spurs system and by the second half of the season he will be someone Popovich will trust. Sacramento has been a head coaching carousel, and it is finally time that he will have a consistent head coach.
Never a strong shooter from behind the arch, Ray McCallum nevertheless showed a propensity for filling up baskets while being a three-year starter at the University of Detroit Mercy.
It appears that McCallum will take Cory Joseph’s role.
That being said, the move to the Spurs could be the best thing that could have ever happened for McCallum’s career.
The San Antonio Spurs have won the offseason, according to many in the basketball world.
