Saddened by Yakub Memons execution: Tharoor
Moderate faction of Hurriyat Conference led by Mirwaiz Umar Farooq said the established norms of justice were blatantly ignored in the case.
“The hanging is against all humanitarian norms and principals of fair play of justice”. While he added that he was not commenting on the merits of a specific case, like Memon’s, he said that he was against the concept of death sentence.
Thousands of people were gathered in Mumbai’s Mahim area to attend Yakub Memon’s funeral.
Meanwhile, president of Dukhtaran-e-Millat, Syedah Aasiyeh Andrabi, said, “Indian jails are filled with criminals”.
Chhota Shakeel has claimed that Yakub Memon is innocent and the indian government betrayed him.
According to Nagpur police sources, he said he wished to speak to his daughter Zubeida. “But you did not even handover the body of Afzal Guru (the Parliament attack convict who was hanged in 2013)”, he said.
“Yakub Memon was an intellectual just like us, who became victim of this fascist regime, again just like us”.
The JKLF chief further said that in totality only Muslims have been executed in India in last couple of years.
Yakub Memon relatives reached the prison after Yakub was hanged.
MLA Engineer Sheikh Abdul Rashid along with his supporters and common citizens also held a symbolic sit-in near the clock tower.
The protesters shouted high pitched slogans like “Gali Gali Main Shor Hain, Delhi Aadam Khor Hain”. “I hope similar commitment of Govt and Judiciary would be shown in all cases of terror irrespective of their caste creed and religion”.

They were believed to have been staged by Mumbai’s Muslim-dominated underworld in retaliation for anti-Muslim violence that had killed more than 1,000 people a few months earlier. “Why Meca Masjid and Malagoan blast accused are not hanged”, he questioned. Witnesses said that while the MLA was staging a protest, a police team detained him along with some of his supporters.
The recriminations began when Congress leaders Digvijay Singh, Shashi Tharoor and Mani Shankar Aiyar expressed displeasure over the execution of 1993 Mumbai blasts convict.
