Safety officials urge extreme caution when using fireworks
The New York State Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Services’ Office of Fire Prevention and Control today urged New Yorkers to use an abundance of caution when using approved sparkling devices to celebrate the Fourth of July.
Rutledge suggested only buying the fireworks from a licensed vendor.
“The safest way to enjoy fireworks is to attend a public fireworks display”, Insurance and Safety Fire Commissioner Ralph Hudgens said in a press release.
The agency estimated that there were 105 fireworks-related incidents in 2016, compared with 34 in the previous year. In Jefferson Parish about 150 complaint calls come in to 911 each year about fireworks with the majority of them coming around The Fourth. It prohibits the sale, possession and use of fireworks except by special permit.
Light only one firework at a time. In 2015, USA hospital emergency rooms treated an estimated 11,900 people for fireworks related injuries, officials said.
