Saina Nehwal beats China’s Sun Yu, wins Australian Open Superseries
Saina won 28-26, 21-16 after a 56-minute battle to upstage the second seed.
Last year, she was beaten in the quarters. She announced her arrival at the global badminton arena back in 2006 Commonwealth Games, Melbourne where she won the bronze medal.
Saina quickly lined up 12 game points and she grabbed the first game when Yihan hit wide to earn the bragging rights.
Saina is very talented and energetic to play in any type of Singles in Badminton. She didn’t get the length initially as Sun was dictating the rallies. With her defensive game under tremendous pressure, the World No.8 displayed some poor judgments and made a lot of unforced errors to trail 5-10.
After losing the first game 11-21, Saina put up a gutsy display to make strong comeback in the second game. She has lost on occasions to them, but then she is only player who has been able to decipher the Chinese code and pose a threat to them.
But she showed great determination and retrieval skills to clinch the next one 21-14. There was a huge change in the momentum of the game as Sun Yu struggled to keep up with her opponent.
Indian cricket player Shikhar Dhawan and Bollywood superstar Amitabh Bachchan also congratulated Saina for her accomplishments. The only time Saina lost was when the two met for the first time way back in 2013.
Saina grabbed a couple of points to draw level and with Sun sending the shuttle outside twice, the Indian led 10-8. Her slices and smashes were equally effective. After winning that point, Saina took back the lead at 13-11. In the semi-finals yesterday, while Saina easily saw off higher placed Chinese Yihan Wang, Sun stunned compatriot and third seed Xuerui Li.
