Saladino triples in 9th to end Tigers’ no-hit bid
The No. 3 prospect in the organization, Montas allowed six runs in three innings as the White Sox split a four-game series with the Tigers.
Verlander allowed three runs on five hits over seven innings.
In possibly his most encouraging start of the season, Verlander returned to past, but familiar, territory with his velocity. With two outs and the bases loaded, he used five 98-99 miles per hour fastballs to strike out Geovany Soto, exiting with a four-run lead.
Not only did Norris do everything he could to recover from his injury, he studied the masters of his art. He tuned into each start by the Los Angeles Dodgers’ Clayton Kershaw and the Toronto Blue Jays’ David Price while he mended.
“I don’t know where it came from, again that’s impressive”, McCann said of the velocity Verlander reached in his final inning of work.
■The other Cabrera: Melky Cabrera hit a two-run home run off Verlander and finished 3-for-4 with three RBIs and two runs.
Much like Verlander and Cabrera, health problems has plagued Sanchez and Victor Martinez in 2015, but both should be able to return and play to their contract value when healthy.
J.D. Martinez followed with a two-run ground-rule double to left.
“Maybe it is just me, but all I was thinking about was that we were down to our last chance to score”, Saladino said.
The rookie yielded a first-inning home run to veteran Victor Martinez and then was felled by a bit of bad luck and timely hitting as the White Sox lost to the Detroit Tigers 7-4 at Comerica Park.
“I feel like he has great stuff”, Soto said.
Verlander said the pitches took effort, but earlier in the game when he was letting it go, he was hitting 93 miles per hour. I have my 100th homer, too, Martinez said.
“Not making the playoffs is failing”, he said. This year has been… a really frustrating year, from a personal aspect.
Davis had two singles before ripping his 11th triple of the season and second in as many games.
The Tigers and White Sox are tied 1-1. Another one was an infield single that a sliding Alexei Ramirez couldn’t corral (a non-declining Ramirez might not have had to leave his feet).
“That’s the first time I’ve seen him at 99 (mph) since I’ve been here”, Tigers’ second-year manager Brad Ausmus said.
Martinez joins former teammate Magglio Ordonez (294 home runs) on the short list of Venezuelan players whove hit 200 or more home runs in the major leagues, as well as current teammate Miguel Cabrera, who earlier this season became the first to hit 400.
White Sox: Chicago opens a four-game series at Yankee Stadium, with Chris Sale (12-10, 3.47) facing Michael Pineda (11-8, 4.10).
