Sally Bell: Abolish the Electoral College
As of this week, Trump has 306 Electoral College votes, while Clinton has 232.
Trump, who offered no evidence for his claims, said that he would have won the popular votes in the U.S. general election “if you deduct the millions of people who voted illegally”.
Regardless your affiliation this election, the Electoral College system didn’t weigh your vote fairly, as “one person, one vote”.
Whichever party slate wins the most popular votes in the state becomes that state’s electors-so that, in effect, whichever presidential ticket gets the most popular votes in a state wins all the electors of that state.
“We are calling on the 149 Electors in those states to ignore their states’ votes and cast their ballots for Secretary Clinton. Why?”
Sanders, meanwhile, hewed close to the line that Clinton’s former campaign has walked on a recount effort being led by former Green Party candidate Jill Stein.
Earlier in the day, Trump tweeted about Clinton conceding in the election and how the results won’t change.
Woods, Gutzman and McClanahan dug deep into the history, along with current challenges to the Electoral Collage, emphasizing that the popular vote has never been a factor in electing presidents. Their votes are more than a meaningless rubber stamping of their states’ election results.
On Nov. 15, Trump tweeted that “The Electoral College is actually genius in that it brings all states, including the smaller ones, into play”.
Two Democratic members of the Electoral College called on members to vote their conscience, even if that means going against the wishes of voters in the states they represent.
The presidential election results are still the same.
Trump’s team is yet to make a comment on the vote recounts.
“This suggests that at least some Republicans think they’re more likely to lose the Electoral College votes in Virginia in the years to come”, Farnsworth said of Cole’s bill. “This is not the outcome we wanted or we worked so hard for, and I’m sorry we did not win this election for the values we share and the vision we hold for our country”.
Now after the fifth time in American history that the popular vote victor lost the Electoral College vote, and second in modern times (the first three were in the 1800s), the talk turns to abolishing it.
