Salma Hayek, Anna Kendrick, Gwyneth Paltrow & More Honored at Variety’s Power
The “Power of Women” event hosted by trade magazine Variety honored Oprah Winfrey, Anna Kendrick, YouTube CEO Susan Wojcicki among others.
Also honored was, who joined the discussion about equal pay. Presented by Lifetime, the event was a luncheon held at the Four Seasons Beverly Wilshire hotel in Beverley Hills.
She said that was said with disgust, so she personally adopted “a kind of an oh-how-did-this-happen-to-me approach” believing that wanting success was somehow a bad thing. “The real empowerment comes when each person leaves this room and makes a decision”.
Kendrick spoke of the power of celebrity to give voice to young people, as she does through the Trevor Project, which provides support and services for gay, lesbian and transgender youth. The Goop founder was noted for her work with L.A. Kitchen, and in her speech, she recalled the times she was urged not to sound intellectual during interviews for fear of being seen as “ambitious”. She later posted a selfie on Instagram.com with Oprah, writing, “I’m s**tting in my paaaaants!!!!!!!!!!”
Gwyneth Paltrow and Oprah Winfrey were both there to be recognized for their work in raising awareness to a variety of different charitable causes.
Speaking about the state of the industry, Paltrow observed that “the power of women rings a bit differently [today]”.
‘We are the generation that said, “We’re not going away at 30,”‘ Salma declared, according to Variety news editor Maane Khatchatourian.
Hayek then talked about Chime For Change, which she co-founded with Beyonce and the fashion brand Gucci.
The campaign supports nongovernmental agencies with the mission of empowering women and girls around the world through initiatives focused on education, health and justice. “It is possible to be a woman who is intelligent, thoughtful, articulate and vicious, while being a woman who is maternal, nurturing, sexual and for other women”.
Salma Hayek Pinault also added that she is extremely confident that she belongs to a generation of change and pointed out that women actors in Hollywood did not want to be considered for only romantic comedies that speak about finding the ideal Prince Charming for them.
