Sam Allardyce mentions Limerick FC at first England press conference
Signing a two-year contract, Allardyce said, “I am extremely honoured to be appointed England manager especially as it is no secret that this is the role I have always wanted”.
Allardyce, at Sunderland since October, will replace Roy Hodgson, who stepped down following England’s shock European Championship defeat by Iceland in the round of 16 last month.
“It’s not potential any more, it’s got to be reality now”. “These players have a lot of experience now, even if some of that experience has been pretty bitter, it could be a great help in motivating them that they don’t want to feel like that again”.
Allardyce declared it was too soon to rubberstamp his captaincy and indicated Mourinho’s use of the 30-year-old would be crucial in the early weeks of the new season.
“We are absolutely delighted to welcome David Moyes to Sunderland, who was by far and away our first choice”, said Ellis.
Allardyce confirmed Sammy Lee, his former assistant when he was in charge of Bolton Wanderers, will become part of his backroom staff.
Allardyce was in confident mood when addressing the media, believing that he is the best man for the job.
“I think first and foremost it’s about regaining, perhaps, a bit of confidence they have lost after the Euros”, he said in an in-house interview with FATV. It’s the most any manager has managed at, five clubs.
“Working with the England elite players will be very exciting for me because they will take on board ideas very quickly”. We have to try to get everyone to enjoy themselves. “It would help the Premier League and us at the worldwide level if we could try and achieve it”. “We will adapt our style to play different opponents”.
New England manager Sam Allardyce has yet to decide if he will retain Wayne Rooney as captain. People see me as being able to turn a club around very quickly and that comes around by taking West Ham up, keeping Blackburn and Sunderland up but I consider myself to have much more than that label. “People said Defoe can not play up front on his own but that is what he did all last season and scored 18 goals”. “I’d describe my style as pragmatic. And to make them aware of the opposition, which may change the style of how we play”.
“We were told Jermain was a player who could not play up front on his own, so what does he do?”
“I expect the players to be very adaptable and very flexible”.
“Big Sam”, as he is popularly known, was then asked what style of play he would bring to the table and he described it in one word – “Pragmatic”. I don’t think there is any doubt about that.
And the England job is not the “poisoned chalice” many onlookers claim it is, according to Allardyce.
Or am I exceptionally good?
