Sam Newman backs old mate Eddie and attacks Caroline Wilson 0
Outspoken AFL commentator and sexist joke Sam Newman has leapt to the defence of his colleague Eddie McGuire, claiming that to call McGuire’s joke sexist is outrageous, overly-sensitive, and devastatingly accurate.
Newman certainly has form, and especially where Wilson is concerned. Honestly and truly, you are becoming an embarrassment.
“I didn’t see it as a violence thing at first (Eddie’s joke), it’s just uncalled for nonsense – so for Bec to come on and just say that, that people don’t like Eddie McGuire is just not true”.
Newman also took aim at the people who were outraged by McGuire’s comments, repeatedly labelling them “excrement”.
Newman then responded: “What?” Don’t take that to another level.
Players from Melbourne AFL club Richmond will boycott radio station Triple M this weekend over the AFL controversy involving media personality Eddie McGuire and journalist Caroline Wilson.
Channel Nine Pointing his finger. And if she stays under – 50. “What do you reckon guys?”
Collingwood president Eddie McGuire, North Melbourne chairman James Brayshaw and All Australian selector Danny Frawley were at the centre of a public outcry this week after suggesting on Triple M that Wilson should be dunked and held under the water of the charity ice slide at the AFL’s Freeze MND charity match.
Last night on ‘The Footy Show’, Sam Newman delivered a commentary that made the country groan so loud we basically made a baritone chorus that could be heard the world over.
Maddern also noted that even though she believes that everyone should “move on” from the incident now that the Triple M team had apologised, she emphasised the power of language in casually reinforcing issues of domestic violence.
The ACMA codes of practice on the portrayal of women on commercial radio note that presenters should not “place undue emphasis on gender and resisting stereotyping… negative or inequitable sex-role portrayal refers to language attitudes or representations, which tend to associate particular roles, modes of behaviour, characteristics”. The guidelines add: “Ensure that reporting and “on-air” discussions respect the dignity of women and are non-exploitive”. Surprise: he thinks everyone is making a big deal over nothing, we should all just leave poor mate alone and anyway, it’s Caroline Wilson’s fault for being the worst!
It’s that last comment that could yet land him, and the network, in hot water again.
