Sam Smith Hits the High Notes in Brooding ‘James Bond’ Theme Song
As soon as “Writing’s on the Wall” was released on Friday (25.09.2015), the James Bond global Fan Club immediately hailed it as a classic 007 song – though other fans weren’t as enthusiastic.
Djalili, who had a minor role in Bond film the World is Not Enough, added: “If you’re not moved by this song you don’t have a pulse”. For you, I have to risk it all / Cause the writing’s on the wall’.
Jimmy Napes, who co-wrote Sam Smith’s “Stay With Me“, also loaned his pen to “Writing’s on the Wall“, and Michael G. Wilson and Barbara Broccoli produced the track.
Spectre hits cinemas in Britain on 26 October (15), 12 days before the film opens in the USA on 6 November (15). He joins the Bond-theme ranks of Adele and Shirley Bassey, and is the first British male singer to sing the theme song since 1965. Starting off with a soaring string intro the song then rises to show off Smith’s impressive range.
Smith told Radio 1 presenter Nick Grimshaw: “I’m so relieved to actually talk about this, this has been top secret mission of my own”.
Surprisingly, no Bond theme song has ever hit number one spot in the United Kingdom singles chart.
User @RuPaulology tweeted: “Erm, the Sam Smith Bond theme”.
The 23-year-old singer debuted the highly-anticipated track which will serve as the opening music to Spectre, with the lyrics sounding like lines from a love song. So where do you think Spectre will fall along the spectrum of great Bond anthems? One happy tweeter commented: “Opinion might be divided but I LOVE Sam Smith’s new Bond song…”
