Samsung 950 Pro SSD Delivers V-NAND, NVMe And Blistering 2500MB/sec Reads
Sammy has taken its 850 PRO SSD with its 2.5-inch form factor and SATA interface and implemented the same 3D V-NAND 32-layer MLC flash in a smaller PCIe M.2 2280 form factor, and given it an NVMe driver. “No longer are consumers dismissing the idea of purchasing an SSD exclusively because they think the price is too high”, says Un-Soo Kim, Samsung senior vice-president for branded memory business. “The 950 PRO is yet another example of a branded memory solution that continues to elevate our portfolio of products and reflects Samsung’s continued leadership in the memory industry”. With the introduction of NVMe, the first protocol optimized for SSDs, users of the Samsung 950 PRO will benefit from improved performance and power saving which can help increase battery life and potentially reduce operating costs.
Samsung has put security and longevity at the forefront of the 950 Pro SSD, with AES 256-bit Full Disk Encryption to protect data and Dynamic Thermal Guard incorporated to protect the drive at temperatures ranging from 0 to 70 degrees Celsius. The larger 512GB storage drive delivers up 2,500MB and 1,500 speeds for read and write, respectively.
As a result, the new 950 PRO comes in 2 flavors at the moment, the 256GB one at $199.99 and the 512GB for $349.99.
It can also withstand physical shocks of up to 1500G/0.5ms and vibrations up to 20G.
Samsung Electronics on Monday rolled out new solid-state drive storage devices for consumers and enterprises with an aim to beef up the firm’s SSD lineup and solidify its lead in the storage market.
Samsung began mass production of its third generation V-NAND technology last month at the 270 acre fab in Xian, China. The 256GB version has read/write speeds of up to 2,200/900 MB/s, random read performance of up to 270,000 IOPS, and random write speeds of up to 85,000 IOPS. Both drives ship with a five year limited warranty covering up to 200 TBW (terabytes written) for the 256GB and 400 TBW on the 512GB, which is strangely less than 10 year warranty of the 850 Pro. Samsung said it plans to add more terabyte-level products in the lineup and tap deeper into the premium market. But today, Samsung has unveiled the 950 Pro SSD, and it blows everything that has come before out the water. “I look forward to providing more information around pricing and availability closer to the local launch”.
