Samsung announces it is working on 11K super-resolution with 2250PPI
If you just bought one of those new flagship Android devices boasting of Quad HD resolution (2560×1440), here’s news that would make you feel you got yourself an obsolete device. Why?
Executive Director Chu Hye Yong of Samsung Display’s Base Technology Department said at the 10th Display Field National Research Development Business General Workshop held at Muju Deogyusan Resort: “We are hoping that we are able to show such technologies at Pyeongchang Olympics if there is a progress in developing technologies”. This translates to a display resolution of 11,264 х 6336 pixels. These have twice as many pixels as a traditional 1080p “Full HD” display and are becoming increasingly common, alongside even more pixel-packed 4K TVs and computer monitors. This will also mean that this phone, if launched would boast of a PPI density of 2250 PPI! Samsung says that, due to this insane amount of pixels, the display will give 3D-like effect without the use of 3D glasses. It seems that this project will be worked on by Samsung and the South Korean government in which the latter is expected to invest a whopping $26.5 million over the course of the next 5 years.
A prototype could be shown to the public as early as the 2018 Pyeongchang Winter Olympics, the report added.
Samsung is not working alone – as many as 13 domestic and foreign companies have been involved in this project, dubbed EnDK, since the 1st of June. Although the human eye can not fathom improvements in the resolution after a certain level, but the report suggests, given high enough pixel density, looking at a Samsung screen would be same as looking at a 3D screen. At this time details are scant regarding the ways in which Samsung plans to achieve this. In all likelihood, by 2020, we’d be laughing at the low-end specifications of the current spec king – the Galaxy s6.
