Samsung, Oculus launch consumer Gear VR for United States dollars 99
At Facebook’s Oculus Connect 2 keynote presentation today, the company revealed that Netflix is now officially available on Samsung’s GearVR virtual reality headset. In order to use it, you need to have a compatible Samsung smartphone – a Galaxy Note 5, Galaxy S6 Edge+, S6 and S6 Edge.
The Samsung Gear VR was first announced back in July 2014 with the South Korean company pulling off something of a coup to partner with arguably the leading virtual reality (VR) headset maker, Oculus.
The Samsung Gear VR with Frost White color option will be available in the U.S. starting this fall. All in all the new mobile virtual reality headset seems to be worth its price and we are eager to see how it really feels and behaves in November.
Naturally, that comment has stirred up quite a bit of chatter among gamers, as the community speculates just how much this new headset might cost.
One of the most significant reasons for its fallback is that it is big chunky head wraparound obstructing the vision with an extra layer of weight. The headset additionally comes with Netflix, Facebook and Twitch content support and is available as an upgraded version over the previous year launched Gear VR Innovator Edition. Samsung is calling the new model simply Gear VR, and it will launch in November, in time for the Black Friday shopping bonanza.
Unlike that device, which harnesses PC power, the Gear VR focuses on offering virtual reality provided by Samsung’s range of Galaxy smartphones.
I have played with Gear VR a bit, and my only real beef was with the motion sickness effect I felt. The latest model is 22 percent lighter than the Gear VR Innovator Edition and more comfortable to wear, Samsung said. However, the Gear VR and Oculus Rift will also add Netfix, Hulu, Vimeo, and other content in the near future.
