Samsung OLED Display To Be Used In 2018 iPhones

Looking at individual display providers, the data shows that South Korea-based Samsung and LG Electronics (LGE) will likely maintain their respective No 1 and 2 spots in the worldwide market share ranking in 2015, with their dominance expected to continue through 2016. The Korean company is rumored to be willing to sell the OLED displays at a discounted price.

However, this may not be good news for other Apple suppliers.

The report about a possible Apple-Samsung partnership comes from reputable KGI analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, who has previously predicted similar things about the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6S development processes accurately.

The report states that in the initial phase Apple will be using a mix of LED and OLED displays as it can be challenging to produce OLED displays for all the iPhones. Japan Display relies on its Apple contract for 30-percent of its revenue, while Sharp is still struggling to stay afloat after a couple problematic years.

In light of Apple’s decision to adopt OLED, the report claims that LG Display is already gearing up to increase its OLED production capacity by investing “several hundred billion yen” in setting up a new large-scale production line. As securing enough panels for the more than 200 million phones Apples ships globally every year will probably be hard, the company will probably offer OLED iPhones alongside those using LCD screens.

LG worked closely with renowned French design firm Wilmotte & Associés, in developing these displays, each display measuring 13 meters high and 8 meters across and consisted of 140 55-inch curved OLED panels. This is because of the overwhelming demand for the iPhone against the yet limited production of OLED. He further added saying, “Samsung Display-manufactured OLED displays have so far been used in all Galaxy flagship smartphones…”

iPhone 7 release is still far, but rumors claimed that the upcoming Apple smartphone will feature a 3GB RAM and waterproof feature.
