Samsung recalls flagship Galaxy Note 7 after battery fires
“Samsung is fully committed to providing the highest quality products to our consumers”, the company said in a statement.
After the update for Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge, the U.S. phone carrier – Verizon is now giving Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge and Galaxy Note 5 a new update.
Do you have a Samsung Galaxy Note 7?
A customer holds a Samsung Electronics Galaxy Note 7 smartphone at the headquarters of South Korean mobile carrier KT in Seoul, South Korea, Friday.
Apple is expected to launch its new iPhone next week and this can also hit Samsung’s business.
It is a good thing that Samsung hasn’t shifted the blame to users, say, by accusing them of using third-party chargers, and hoping that the rest of the phones don’t have the same issues. Samsung has identified the affected inventory and stopped sales and shipments of those devices. “A few customers came to us to buy Note 7 but we advised them to wait for some more days as we are waiting for more clarity”, said Sameer, working at a smartphone shop at Old Airport Street. There have been 35 cases reported so far where owners of the Galaxy Note7 have reported the phone bursting into flames.
The planned release of the Note 7 in several European countries has now been suspended over growing safety concerns.
“It is clever for Samsung to replace the affected models, not offering fixes”, he said, adding this would help consumer confidence.
Citing an unnamed company official, Yonhap said Samsung’s investigation has found that faulty batteries have caused phones to catch fire. The company’s shares rose 0.8 percent early Friday after falling 2 percent the day before.
Samsung is the global leader in smartphone sales, selling 76.7 million in Q2 2016; Apple is second with 44.4 million sold.
HI Securities analyst James Song said the replacement costs may be somewhat limited as Samsung could recycle components of the recalled phones. Current creates heat, which – if the battery is manufactured or used improperly – quickly turns into a problem.
JerryRigEverything posted a video on YouTube in which he conducts a teardown of the Galaxy Note 7 battery and shows why the unit can potentially explode. And there is also no guarantee that the new product will be without defect.
